Getting Started

Overview

With Dextr® you can create text faster, simpler and smarter. And we’ve designed it to suit your testing style — right or left handed, one-thumb, one-finger, two thumbs or all five fingers (one-handed) on your smartphone or tablet.

Dextr’s unique alphabetical layout means every letter is where you’d expect. The only memory trick required is the placement of the letter Z. And we’ve aligned and highlighed the vowels to help you get oriented.

We’ve spaced the letters out in a unique grid to ensure you’ll rarely hit the wrong key. No more embarrassing typos!

You’ll also enjoy advanced sugestions: word completion, word correction and even next word prediction. This means far fewer keystrokes and greater speed and efficiency.

Languages & Dictionaries

Manage my Personal Dictionary

Dextr’s powerful prediction tool from Adaptxt® learns new words in real time as you type them. These new words are added to My Dictionary and offered as suggestions later. You can store up to 2500 words in the personal dictionary. And you can save your dictionary to your SD card.

From this menu item you can:

  1. Import your current Android dictionary – so any new words you created before installing Dextr can be included.
  2. Delete words you may have accidentally added.
  3. Add extra dictionaries and language packs

Add-on Manager: extra dictionaries and language packs

Dextr’s powerful prediction tool from Adaptxt® allows you to load a wide variety of Add-On dictionaries, both language and industry-specific.

Industry specific dictionaries provide a database of wordsspecific to a given profession, such as business, IT, medicine, legal or finance.

  3. Tap “download” and then “Accept and download”. Wait for your dictionary to automatically install.
  4. Once installed, tap your device’s “back” button . This should take you to your “Additional Dictionaries” menu. Your dictionary should now be listed in your dictionary menu, with its box checked/ticked.

Activate a dictionary or language pack:

There are two ways to activate a dictionary as your default:

1. Activate a dictionary via “Prioritize Add-ons” tab.

  1. From your Dextr Keyapd Settings menu, select> Add-on Manager >Prioritize Add-ons. A menu of all your downloaded dictionaries should appear. The language listed as “Priority 1″ is your default.
  2. Tap and hold the icon to the left of dictionary you wish to reprioritize. This menu item should appear to “float” above the menu. Move it up or down the list. Place it above the menu item you wish to switch with. And release. The order should now be rearranged to your preference.

Predictions & Corrections

Text Prediction

Dextr comes bundled with Adaptxt® — powerful, state-of-the-art text prediction from KPT Technologies. Adaptxt offers both:

  1. Word completion: As you start typing, Adaptxt looks at the first few letters and starts suggesting words that begin with those letters. You can either select from the menu of word completions or hit either space bar to select the top suggestion (in the yellow bubble)
  2. Next word suggestion: Almost like reading your mind, after just a few instances of learning your style of typing, Adaptxt suggests what the next word in your sentence might be – even before you’ve typed the first letter. Think of all the keystrokes you can save!

Just tap the correct word suggestion from the menu above the keypad, or hit either space bar select the top suggestion (in the yellow bubble)

Enable/disable Text Prediction: However, there may be times when you wish to turn this feature on or off.

  1. In the Dextr Keypad Settings menu, scroll to “Text Prediction is enabled” (it’s enabled by default)
  2. Simply uncheck/untick to disable Text Prediction.
  3. And check/tick to enable Text Prediction.

Error Correction

Even the most dextrous texter occasionally hits the wrong letter. While we’ve spaced the keys out on the Dextr Keypad to reduce the chance so this… it still happens.

The Adaptxt® Error Correction function factors this in and will suggest alternative words (in orange bubbles) based on wrong letter order or adjacent letters.

  1. So if you meant to type “just” but typed in “jsut”, it will suggest “just” in an orange bubble.
  2. And if you typed “kust”, because the “j” and “k” keys are adjacent, it will suggest “just” in an orange bubble

Enable/disable Text Prediction: There may be times when you wish to turn this feature on or off.

  1. In the Dextr Keypad Settings menu, scroll to “AutoCorrection” (it’s enabled by default)
  2. Simply uncheck/untick to disable ErrorCorrection.
  3. And check/tick to enable ErrorCorrection.

Auto Correction

Think of Auto Correction as Error Correction on steroids. Auto Correction lets you insert corrections automatically, with a tap of the space bar. The Auto Correction suggestion appears always as the first suggestions, in a yellow bubble. To select this suggestion, simply tap a space bar. It inserts the suggested word and adds a space after it.

  1. So if you meant to type “just” but typed in “jsut”, it will suggest “just” in an orange bubble. You just need to hit either space bar to select it and add a space. You just continue typing.
  2. And if you typed “kust”, because the “j” and “k” keys are adjacent, it will suggest “just” in an orange bubble. You just need to hit either space bar to select it, add a space and continue typing

Enable/disable Auto Correction: However, there may be times when you wish to turn this feature on or off. When you turn off Error Correction, Auto Correction also switches off automatically. To leave Error Correction on but turn AutoCorrection off:

  1. In the Dextr Keypad Settings menu, scroll to “Auto Correction” (it’s enabled by default)
  2. Simply uncheck/untick to disable AutoCorrection. You’ll notice, that “Auto Correction” turns off automatically too.
  3. And check/tick to enable AutoCorrection.

Selecting Auto Correction modes

You can choose three different modes of Auto Correction:

  • High – for fast typers who make frequent mistakes
  • Medium -ideal for most people who occasionally make mistakes
  • Low – if you rarely make spelling mistakes

Enable/disable Auto Correction: However, there may be times when you wish to turn this feature on or off. When you turn off Error Correction, Auto Correction also switches off automatically. To leave Error Correction on but turn AutoCorrection off:

  1. In the Dextr Keypad Settings menu, scroll to “Auto Correction” (it’s enabled by default)
  2. Simply uncheck/untick to disable AutoCorrection. You’ll notice, that “Auto Correction” turns off automatically too.
  3. And check/tick to enable AutoCorrection.

Special Character options

Dextr lets you type words with special (or extended) characters like accented letters via the Adaptxt® prediction tool. If you want to type a word like café, just type in cafe and, if it’s in the dictionary, Dextr will offer it as a suggestion.

You can also manually select special characters by pressing and holding on a key (i.e. to get â, press and hold the “a” key. A selection of a-related special characters will pop up. Tap to select the one you want. Hit to close this pop-up.

Texting Efficiency

Track your keypad usage statistics

We’re constantly striving to make Dextr even better. You can help us with this by allowing us to track your keyboard usage. By collecting data such as keypress speed & frequency, error rates and efficiency savings.

DON’T WORRY – we value your privacy, so we don’t (and won’t) collect info such as the content of the text you type or any personal information. That would be uncool.

This option is turned off by default. Please check this box if you’d like to help us help you.

View your efficiency score

Dextr is all about helping you put your thoughts into words, faster, easier and more quickly, easily, accurately and efficiently.

Tap this menu option if you’d like to view:

  • Your texting speed – measured in keys per minute
  • Your texting efficiency – how many keystrokes you’ve saved, and therefore how much more efficient Dextr has helped you become
